Named to honor our legacy 1861 is the year James Skinner staked his claim in CA winemaking hisotry.  Pair that with our commitment to producing El Dorado-grown Rhône varietals, a nod to the ancient Châteauneuf-du-Pape region is a must.  Winegrowing in the Southern Rhône’s most infamous region dates back to the 14th century when the Avignon Popes, already great lovers of Burgundy, began developing and promoting wines from the neighboring vineyards to the North.  These vineyards are made up of 13 varietals, generally field-blends of red and white interplanted, and dominated by Grenache and Syrah.  The New World take on these wines are casually referred to as “GSM” (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre.  Rivaling the great Châteauneuf houses by producing cleaner wines with deeper texture, purity of fruit and expression of terroir, California GSM’s are some of the most exciting (and even collectible) wines around.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The most striking aspect of the Eighteen Sixty-One’s first impression is its unassailable El Dorado character. That is to say this wine is both rustic and vibrant. Aromatics of clove, cherry blossom and sweet cream give way to an unmistakable (and sort of nostalgic) worn leather that anchors the otherwise buoyant nose. On entry, Grenache dominates with spicy levity, evolving across the palate framed by sultry Syrah and finishes with a generous lift of Mourvèdre-driven austerity… ripe Rainier cherry, sweet sun tea and a note of black licorice keep the palate intrigued for hours.
Winemaker's Notes
Inspired by the earthy, spicy, complex wines of the Southern Rhône, we selected specific lots of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre that were reminiscent of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Everything was hand-harvested, meticulously sorted and fermented in stainless steel, open-top fermentation vessels. Each lot contained varying amounts of whole-cluster (stem-inclusion), and all fermentations began with indigenous yeast.
