Mourvèdre has many names around the world. In Spain it is called Monastrell, in Australia it goes by Mataro, and in France and America it goes by Mourvèdre. This varietal is known for its meaty, earthy, and rustic qualities and is commonly used as a blending component. More recently, winemakers are bottling it as its own variety to showcase its unique characteristics. Only 800 acres exist in California of which Skinner has about 3 acres planted on its two estate vineyards.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The 2015 Estate Mourvédre shows some red and blue fruit up front but is dominated by savory aromatics like tobacco, black olive, and dried herbs such as sage and lavender. The palate has modest tannins and structure coupled with a sense of minerality and fresh acidity on the finish.
Winemaker's Notes
This is a 50/50 blend of two clones of Mourvédre grown at both our Stoney Creek estate vineyard at 2740’ and planted in well draining decomposed granite soils with a small addition from our lower elevation White Oak Flats estate site. The wine is fermented in small batches with manual punch-downs twice a day. After 3-5 days of cold soaking at 55 degrees, the tanks are allowed to warm up and fermentation kicks in spontaneously. The wine spends 18 months undisturbed in French oak prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur added.
