Viognier is the famous white grape grown in Condrieu and Ch. Grillet in the Northern Rhone valley. It is famous for its floral and stone fruit aromatics and produces a wine with great aromatics, elegance, and suppleness. 2015 Mourvedre, El Dorado

"Pittinger’s expression of the grape in its 2015 vintage highlights tart red fruit flavors, moderate tannins and a hint of gaminess for which the grape is known. Pair with roasted lamb, take a sip, and see what the fuss is all about." Chris Macias, Sacramento Bee

2014 Six-Horse Zinfandel

Six Horse, a sister brand, produced and bottled by Skinner Vineyards & Winery, pays homage to the original Skinner winery of the late 1800’s. Its purpose is to focus on legacy varietals once grown by James Skinner beginning in 1861 and throughout the Gold Rush Era. The name is derived from the 6-hp engine that was utilized at the winery and considered “high tech” at the time. Zinfandel is one of the varietals once planted by James and remains a prevalent and important part of the Sierra Foothills wine industry today.

2014 Roussane, El Dorado

Roussanne is the noble white grape of the Northern Rhone where it makes long-lived Hermitage Blanc. In California it is gaining popularity as a single varietal or as a component in white Rhone blends. At Skinner it is the primary varietal for our Seven Generations white blend, and in certain vintages makes a varietal specific wine.

2013 Syrah, El Dorado

Syrah is a versatile varietal and has the ability to produce great wines in various climates and regions. Styles and profiles vary as you move from the cooler coastal sites towards the warmer interior vineyards. The Foothills based Syrahs are distinctive to the specific region in which they grow. Amador Syrah is typically bigger and rounder than the Fair Play (El Dorado) Syrah grown just up the hill, which tends to be more restrained and rustic in nature while showing pronounced minerality.

2013 Petite Sirah, El Dorado

Petite Sirah (AKA Durif) is a cross between Peloursin and Syrah. There is typically nothing petite about it in style and flavor profile. It has smaller berries and thicker skins, thus a tannic wine is often produced. It was first introduced to California in 1884 and quickly became the varietal of choice in vineyards. While we don’t have records to confirm, there is a very likely chance it was grown and produced at J. Skinner in the late 1800’s.

2015 Grenache Blanc, El Dorado

Grenache Blanc is the main white grape in the Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf du Pape appellations. While plantings in California have increased considerably in the last few years, there are still only about 250 acres in the state. The warm days and cool nights of The Foothills showcase the unique qualities common to this varietal – a subtle richness and racy natural acidity.

2014 Grenache, El Dorado

Grenache is one of the five varietals planted at the original J. SKINNER winery in the 1860’s and is the focal point of our wine program today. It is the most widely planted wine grape in the world, but only 8500 acres exist in California. Recently, Grenache has seen a renaissance in quality and plantings in California. We have five clones of Grenache planted in poor shallow soils onto low vigor rootstocks that limit yields and concentrate flavor. Our warm and dry Mediterranean climate, coupled with volcanic and granitic soils, makes our region ideally suited for this grape varietal.
