Grenache Blanc, while not considered “obscure”, is still not widely understood and is often shrugged off as a blender.  Of course, this is not the case when it comes to our approach to Grenache Blanc; this varietal, with all its complexities, takes no back seat to Viognier or Marsanne/Roussane blends.  Our goal is to celebrate Grenache Blanc; the marriage of rustic minerality and bizarre floral-salinity, with deep texture and nervy poise.

We wanted to make something unique to Skinner, and we wanted it to be a wine we could share with the world. An approachable blend that incorporated all of our “strange” legacy fruit married with varieties that are more common, but nevertheless El Dorado through and through – radiant and wild.  We wanted to make a wine that, perhaps, cannot be made anywhere else.  And so was born our Native red, a tribute to our original brand name, J. Skinner Native Wines dating back to 1861.

Named to honor our legacy 1861 is the year James Skinner staked his claim in CA winemaking hisotry.  Pair that with our commitment to producing El Dorado-grown Rhône varietals, a nod to the ancient Châteauneuf-du-Pape region is a must. The New World take on these wines are casually referred to as “GSM” (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre) and, California GSM’s are some of the most exciting wines around.

Rosé is produced in many different styles with numerous varietals around the world. We pattern our rosé after the crisp and refreshing version from the South of France along the Cotes d’azur in areas such as Bandol, all the while continuing to honor the spirited terroir of  El Dorado County.

Mourvèdre has many names around the world. In Spain it is called Monastrell, in Australia it goes by Mataro, and in France and America it goes by Mourvèdre. This varietal is known for its meaty, earthy, and rustic qualities and is commonly used as a blending component in wines. More recently, winemakers are bottling it as its own variety to showcase its unique characteristics. Only 800 acres exist in California of which Skinner has about 3 acres planted on its two estate vineyards.

Syrah has to be one of life’s greatest joys and few places on planet Earth are as ideally suited for Syrah as El Dorado County.  Our steep, mountainous slopes and granitic soils; our dry, warm climate and temperate, breezy evenings… Syrah absolutely thrives here, making for versatile material for us to explore the spectrum of its personalities, and allowing us to make something complex and downright otherworldly.
