92 Points Wine&Spirits Magazine | "Skinner sources fruit from vines at a wide range of altitudes, from 1,300 to 3,000 feet, focusing mostly on grapes from Fenaughty and Sumu Kaw. This wine comes across as light and brisk, with a texture that’s just generous enough to mellow the cool spiciness and floral strawberry flavors. Fresh and pretty, it’s a lovely match for chicken liver mousse or most anything on a charcuterie plate." Wine&Spirits Magazine

92 Points Wine Enthusiast Magazine | "This classy wine offers a mix of spice rack and black cherry aromas, with rich plum, earth and rhubarb flavors. There is balance between ripeness of fruit and tension from the tannins and acidity. It stands on it own as a beautifully complex but not heavy wine." Reviewed by Jim Gordon

91 Points Wine Enthusiast Magazine | "This will be an outstanding dinner wine when a roast or steak is on the menu. It has a good, gripping texture and firm acidity that will stand up well to fatty dishes. A nice core of blackberry and black-cherry flavors is surrounded by hints of clove and cinnamon." This Syrah based blend was born during our blending trials, as we experimented with softening the burly Syrah by adding a little Grenache and mourvedre. The resulting blend has become one of our most coveted wines, finding a nice balance between the 1861 Grenache based blend and our Estate Syrah.

Petite Sirah (AKA Durif) is a cross between Peloursin and Syrah. There is typically nothing petite about it in style and flavor profile. It has smaller berries and thicker skins, thus a tannic wine is often produced. It was first introduced to California in 1884 and quickly became the varietal of choice in vineyards. While we don’t have records to confirm, there is a very likely chance it was grown and produced at J. Skinner in the late 1800’s.

93 Points & Editor's Choice Wine Enthusiast Magazine | "This wine tastes bold and assertive, pushing smoky oak and vanilla flavors close to the edge but rescuing them with attractive ripe flavors of blackberry and black cherry. The wine is full bodied, layered and mouthcoating, supported by moderate tannins that melt into the bold flavors." Reviewed by Jim Gordon

Grenache is one of the five varietals planted at the original J. SKINNER winery in the 1860’s and is the focal point of our wine program today. It is the most widely planted wine grape in the world, but only 8500 acres exist in California. Recently, Grenache has seen a renaissance in quality and plantings in California. We have five clones of Grenache planted in poor shallow soils onto low vigor rootstocks that limit yields and concentrate flavor. Our warm and dry Mediterranean climate, coupled with volcanic and granitic soils, makes our region ideally suited for this grape varietal.

94 Points | Wine Enthusiast Magazine: "Elegant and silky, this medium-bodied wine is carried by aromas of cinnamon and dried currant. The palate brings tones of mineral, plum and black tea, with a lightly tannic texture and a good dose of acidity. The wine has a distinct personality and showcases the high-elevation El Dorado appellation's suitability for Rhône varieties." Reviewed by Jim Gordon

Syrah is a very versatile varietal and has the ability to produce great wines in various climates and regions. Styles and profiles vary as you move from the cooler coastal sites towards the warmer interior vineyards. The Foothills based Syrahs are distinctive to the specific region in which they grow. Amador Syrah is much bigger and bolder than the Fair Play (El Dorado) Syrah grown just up the hill, which tends to be more elegant or rustic in nature.

Mourvèdre has many names around the world. In Spain it is called Monastrell, in Australia it goes by Mataro, and in France and America it goes by Mourvèdre. This varietal is known for its meaty, earthy, and rustic qualities and is commonly used as a blending component in wines. More recently, winemakers are bottling it as its own variety to showcase its unique characteristics. Only 800 acres exist in California of which Skinner has about 3 acres planted on its two estate vineyards.
