Red

We wanted to make something unique to Skinner, and we wanted it to be a wine we could share with the world. An approachable blend that incorporated all of our “strange” legacy fruit married with varieties that are more common, but nevertheless El Dorado through and through – radiant and wild.  We wanted to make a wine that, perhaps, cannot be made anywhere else.  And so was born our Native red, a tribute to our original brand name, J. Skinner Native Wines dating back to 1861.

Plummy and floral layers over a foundation of spiced fig and alfalfa.  Creamy, bodacious blackberry framed by a stone-fruit-y brightness that gives this wine tremendous tension.  Supple tannins and silky mouthfeel definitively answers the question “Why Mourvèdre?”  Hands down.

Deep aromatic intensity suggests a very serious wine, brimming with varietal purity and earthen expressions.  The nose exudes a peppery lift, Mirabelle plum, lavender, Earl Grey tea and prosciutto, and a palate, with an explosive core of lush black fruit, framed by glossy tannins and lilting texture.  Possessing spectral palate presence, delicious and occasionally austere, this Syrah never gets boring.

93 Points & Editor's Choice Wine Enthusiast Magazine | "This wine tastes bold and assertive, pushing smoky oak and vanilla flavors close to the edge but rescuing them with attractive ripe flavors of blackberry and black cherry. The wine is full bodied, layered and mouthcoating, supported by moderate tannins that melt into the bold flavors." Reviewed by Jim Gordon

92 Points Wine Enthusiast Magazine | "This classy wine offers a mix of spice rack and black cherry aromas, with rich plum, earth and rhubarb flavors. There is balance between ripeness of fruit and tension from the tannins and acidity. It stands on it own as a beautifully complex but not heavy wine." Reviewed by Jim Gordon

91 Points Wine&Spirits Magazine | "This makes a bright and airy first impression, with mountain-grown freshness to its sweet strawberry flavors. It’s a blend of mostly grenache, with some mourvedre and syrah, most of it purchased fruit. Oak adds a smoky element, but it’s the green-peppercorn spice and brisk strawberry fruit that lasts."

92 Points Wine&Spirits Magazine | "Focused on syrah, grenache and mourvedre from Skinner’s Stoney Creek estate, this wine’s full-on richness emphasizes bright strawberry scents, succulent cherry flavors and a pretty, earthy scent that brings to mind freshly turned garden soil. One-third of the lot ages in new French oak, lending a toasty scent to underline the wine’s warm generosity. Decant it for grilled quail."

Petite Sirah (AKA Durif) is a cross between Peloursin and Syrah. There is typically nothing petite about it in style and flavor profile. It has smaller berries and thicker skins, thus a tannic wine is often produced. It was first introduced to California in 1884 and quickly became the varietal of choice in vineyards. While we don’t have records to confirm, there is a very likely chance it was grown and produced at J. Skinner in the late 1800’s.

Six Horse, a sister brand, produced and bottled by Skinner Vineyards & Winery, pays homage to the original Skinner winery of the late 1800’s. Its purpose is to focus on legacy varietals once grown by James Skinner beginning in 1861 and throughout the Gold Rush Era. The name is derived from the 6-hp engine that was utilized at the winery and considered “high tech” at the time. Zinfandel is one of the varietals once planted by James and remains a prevalent and important part of the Sierra Foothills wine industry today.
